Patricia Polacco is one of the most well respected authors and illustrators in children’s literature. Books such as Chicken Sunday, Thank You, Mr. Falker, Christmas Tapestry, Mr. Lincoln’s Way, and Welcome Comfort are a few of her well known books that demonstrate the importance of understanding multiculturalism and social justice. Polacco came from a diverse family of storytellers, which shaped her career as an author. She grew up in a multicultural town where there were different races, ethnicities, and beliefs that shaped her views on the world. It wasn’t until she moved to the rural country when she realized how multiculturalism shaped her life. “Now that I am in the rural area, I didn’t realize that not every child has the glory of growing up in a neighborhood where people are different than they are. Multicultural literature gives them an understanding that they might not otherwise have; they won’t hear it in their own homes” (Polacco, 2010). Through her illustrations and stories, Polacco is able to help broaden children’s knowledge of the outside world.
